Your Frequently Asked Questions About Yowofek

1. What is Young Women Feminist in Kenya (YOWOFEK)?

YOWOFEK is an indigenous network that champions the rights of women and girls among the Malakote communities in Kenya. We aim to strengthen their capacities to influence policies, decision-making processes, and address harmful cultural practices that demean the dignity of women and girls.

Our mission is to create a healthy environment, protecting and empowering vulnerable women, girls, trans people, and intersex people to become effective agents of development and change to improve the quality of their lives and that of future generations.

Our vision is an empowered society that embraces justice, equity, and diversity.

YOWOFEK was founded in response to the tragic death of a young intersex person who was shunned by their family and died due to physical assault by their employer. This tragedy led a group of intersex people in Tana River to come together to support one of their own, leading to the creation of YOWOFEK to advocate for the rights and dignity of intersex domestic workers and other vulnerable groups.

We have several key programs, including:

  • Reproductive Justice
  • Climate and/or Environmental Justice
  • Economic Justice
  • Labour Rights
  • Gender-based Violence
  • Young Feminism

We work to strengthen their capacities to influence policies and decision-making processes, address harmful cultural practices, and ensure their access to natural resources, indigenous knowledge, and overall wellbeing.

We spearhead policy initiatives aimed at securing the labour rights of women domestic workers, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect.
